Amazon.com Product Description Blending RAZR high style with an affordable price tag, the sleek Motorola W490 offers compelling communication features to keep you in touch with ease. With a vibrant color screen and lengthy talk-time, this compact flip phone is a handy mobile companion. In addition to text messaging capabilities, you can chat with buddies using Yahoo!, MSN, AOL, or ICQ instant messaging services. Other features include a 1.3-megapixel camera with video capture, USB wired connectivity with mass storage capability, Bluetooth connectivity with stereo music streaming, and MicroSD memory card expansion.
With T-Mobile's MyFaves service, you'll enjoy unlimited nationwide calling to your 5 favorite people. | T-Mobile Service The W490 operates on GSM 850/900/1800/1900 networks and can handle high-speed data connectivity via T-Mobile's EDGE network (which stands for "Enhanced Data Rates for Global Evolution"). This high-speed, mobile data and Internet access technology is fast enough to support a wide range of advanced data services (with average data speeds between 75-135Kbps), including video and music clips, full picture and video messaging, high-speed color Internet access, and email on the go. It's compatible with T-Mobile's myFaves service, which allows you to call up to five of your most common contacts--on any network, even landlines--without using any of your minutes. Learn more about myFaves from T-Mobile. Phone Features Measuring 0.69 inches thin, the Motorola W490 sports a 1.9-inch LCD screen with support for 262K colors and a 176 x 220-pixel resolution. It has a 5 MB internal memory, which can be expanded up to 2 GB using optional MicroSD memory cards. This phone can store up to 1000 contact entries (plus up to 250 stored on the SIM card), and each entry can store up to five numbers as well as picture ID. This Motorola phone includes the innovative CrystalTalk technology, which automatically accounts for background noise during a call and adjusts the audio quality based on ambient noise conditions to provide the optimal conversational experience. CrystalTalk also reduces the volume of the background noise picked up by the microphone during a call, making it possible to be more easily heard over the phone while in a noisy environment. This phone provides Bluetooth version 1.1 wireless connectivity, and includes profiles for communication headset, handsfree car kits, and audio/video remote control. With the A2DP Bluetooth profile, you can stream your music to a pair of compatible Bluetooth stereo headphones. In addition to SMS text messaging capabilities, the W490 offers built-in instant messaging with Yahoo!, MSN, AOL, and ICQ services. iTap text entry, which is a technology that makes it easier for entering text on handsets, is built into the unit--a plus for mobile email and text messaging users. Other features include: - Music file support: MP3, AAC, AAC+, eAAC+
- 1.3-megapixel camera with 8x digital zoom and video capture
- PIM tools: calendar, calculator, voice memos

Huston we have a problem August 23, 2008 If you like listening to people who have their head in a metal pail then this is the phone for you! When the volume is turned all the way up it will never bother anyone near you, but then again you might not hear it either. T-mobile should be embarrassed to carry this phone and I am insulted as a so called valued customer that they would even consider offering it to me. Even my very first analog phone had better sound quality than this poor excuse of a phone. This was my first try at a Motorola product and I must say it left a lasting impression.
Ps. why can't I leave less than one star? isn't it a bit presumptuous that all products sold on Amazon have a 20% approval rating?
Compact yet Sturdy August 6, 2008 PROS
visually appealing
not as thin and wide as the razr--more of an ideal size; fits in hands nicely
very durable. i've dropped this thing countless times--on cement, tile, wooden floors--and have only one scratch on the corner. barely noticeable.
camera phone is pretty decent in the proper lighting. it also comes with a flash and different options of lighting and colors.
the interface is simple, yet attractive. i prefer motorolas for this reason. a lot of other companies make their phones oversimplified with texts only. this thing uses pictures, which makes it easier to navigate.
keypad is flat but separated with raised lines for ease of use.
can discreetly change the ring style without opening the phone or making any noise, which is ideal when you're trying to silence it in a movie theater or during class.
CONS
while i don't regret buying this phone, the speaker on it is WAY TOO QUIET, unless you can get the other person to speak loudly enough. if they're speaking at a normal volume, even with no noise around them, you'll still likely miss quite a few words they say. i've never had this problem with any other phone. very frustrating and takes a while to get used to.
almost every, single time the phone gets dropped, the back piece comes off, and you have to go on a hunt for it.
while it has mp3 capabilities, it doesn't automatically come with enough memory for many mp3 files. i uploaded 3 onto it and reached the max. i eventually had to delete one in order to make room for more pictures.
OVERALL i think the phone is worth the purchase. that is unless you make very frequent phone calls. otherwise, if you want a phone that looks nice and feels expensive, this is it.
Horrible May 16, 2008 2 out of 6 found this review helpful
i gave it one star, because i could not give it ZERO. I got this phone because i needed an upgrade. I am so mad i got this one, after reading the features i thought it was a good investment, but for my surprise, the phone itself it is not of a good quality. after couple of weeks, a message would come up with " insert SIMS now" and besides that the number 8, would be dialing by itself. since i could not have a conversation, then i tried to hung up and turn it off. for my surprise the phone would not turn off. It is very slow and complicated to use. the only good thing is the variety wall papers and ringtones available. NOTHING ELSE, please do not waste your money.
difficult to use in several ways May 14, 2008 5 out of 13 found this review helpful
I've had this beasty for about 6 months now. Enough already.
Pros: It feels solid and I've managed, somehow, to drop it onto concrete twice. No problem. Battery life. Moi bien, zehr gut, I like it. Sometimes I remember to plug it in, but it never seems to need it. Really, I wish my laptop could pick up a few pointers here.
Cons: ...oh the cons... Sound quality = fair to poor. It's that whole staccato, intermittent, ..dang it, what's that guy's name? pop music, 60's, something like 'dominio', grrr... affectation that I really can't stand. Guess I'm just not in tune with the current trends.
Sound loudness = really really bad, oh so very bad. What's that Lassie? Tony's got Omar cornered? Can ya bark that again, the cat yawned and I couldn't hear you. ..so sad.
Handling & cornering = my 90hp hybrid would run rings around this thing. ... i know, i know, only 88 minutes but I gotta dial 911.. that could take some time. You have to wait after each keypress to see if it actually worked. Navigating the cumbersome menu is slow both because of the response time and the poor layout.
The wrap-up = Luckily I was out in the rain a bit this past weekend.. ok, a lot of rain, for hours, at the Radiohead show in Bristow VA... and that put this bleeping phone outta my misery. (and yes, it was definitely worth it.. Radiohead, I mean)
No more Motorola for me. Ever.
PASS ON THIS & T-Mobile April 22, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I bought this phone for my wife for Christmas. For the past couple weeks we have been getting an "insert SIM" message on the screen. We have tried reinserting it several times always with the same result. The card worked fine in other phones. They are sending me a replacement phone. (They won't exchange at the stores.)
The frustration is that this is clearly a warranty issue and T-mobile wants to ding me the cost of freight both ways! No ifs, ands, or buts. The supervisor I spoke to towed the company line.
When we first got T-mobile in 2003, they were great. If we had a reasonable complaint they were easy to deal with and responsive. Now they have become the same or worse than everyone else. I don't have a better recommendation. I would cancel today, but they want a $200 per phone cancellation charge. You would think with the number of choices available for cell phones, the customer service aspects would improve?
