The ruggedized Samsung Rugby is certified to Military Standard MI-SID-810F, withstanding dust, shock vibrations, rain, humidity, solar radiation and altitude and temperature extremes. | AT&T Service Options This AT&T phone can handle high-speed data connectivity via AT&T's 3G mobile broadband data network, which is available in most major metropolitan areas. The AT&T 3G network uses the dual-band UMTS 850/1900 MHz network (also known as WCDMA), making it possible to enjoy a variety of feature-rich wireless multimedia services. It also gives AT&T the advantage of offering simultaneous voice and data services. In areas where the 3G network is not available, you'll continue to receive service on the AT&T EDGE network, which offers availability in more than 13,000 US cities and along some 40,000 miles of major highways. Providing average data speeds between 75-135Kbps, it's fast enough to support a wide range of advanced data services, including video and music clips, full picture and video messaging, high-speed color Internet access, and email on the go. You'll also enjoy quad-band GSM connectivity, which allows you to make calls in more than 190 countries and access data applications in the more than 135 countries where AT&T offers international data roaming. With 3G connectivity, you'll be able to access AT&T's Video Share service, which enables you to send a live, one-way video stream to another compatible phone during a standard voice call. The service also allows you to switch the direction of the video stream during the same phone call. (Customers must be in an area served by the company's 3G network and have a Video Share-enabled phone.) A majority of users in the architecture, engineering and construction industries rated the ability to share live video through Video Share highly, according to research commissioned by AT&T. Video Share lets you see progress on a job site or review the day's work without having to drive from an office or other site to do so.
This 3G-enabled handset is compatible with AT&T's Video Share calling. | You can take advantage of the AT&T Navigator GPS software and service, a full-featured premium navigation application that includes audible turn-by-turn directions, real-time traffic updates and re-routing options, and 3D moving maps (additional charges applicable). AT&T Navigator offers several other features to make your commute more enjoyable and reliable, including mobile access to Yellowpages.com. Additionally, AT&T Navigator is the only mobile phone-based GPS service that provides integrated speech recognition for address entry and points of interest search. With 3G connectivity, you'll be able to access AT&T's Cellular Video (CV) service and the Internet while on the go. Cellular Video features content from CNN, The Weather Channel, iFilm, Comedy Central and exclusive premium content from HBO and much more. And you get access to AT&T Mobile Music, which enables you to buy tracks while on the, access the Napster subscription music service, stream music video, discover what's playing with Music ID song-recognition software, and find out what's hot with The Buzz music news portal. (A MEdia Max subscription bundle is recommended for accessing AT&T's Internet, video, and music services.) The phone has a built-in web browser for MEdia Net downloads and mobile web browsing. AT&T's MEdia Net service enables you to receive and send emails, read news headlines, get weather updates, download games and ringtones, and more. Small business and enterprise customers also have the option to use AT&T's Enterprise Paging to connect quickly to its workforce from a central location. Enterprise Paging is an AT&T-hosted service that allows a centralized dispatch system administrator to build customized group distribution lists of workers in the field and to send group notifications via text messaging. Workers can respond immediately or take the appropriate action in the message.
With its built-in A-GPS, you can use the optional AT&T Navigator service to get you to your destination with points of interest and turn-by-turn navigation. |

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly November 16, 2008 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
OK, so this phone is built like the proverbial Brick #*@! House. That I love. However, compared to my previous Nokia's, this thing is a huge battery hog. Huge, like 3 to 4 x the consumption, unless my new battery is a bad one. I like to use a corded headset. Not only is Samsung's proprietary headset a painful fit(I've looked for third party makers), but is occupies the same slot on the phone as the charger. So if you're an old school headset user, this is a killjoy. I looked @ Sprint/ Nextel's Motorola i580 afterwards. Similar in many aspects, but it too is a battery hog, will cost you $125-$200, and is on a network some people may not like.
GREAT PRODUCT - It delivers all it promises... (not from a kid) November 2, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I needed 3 phones for a family plan. Each had different needs. I'm getting older and hard of hearing, so I needed a phone with a good speaker system and long battery life plus I wanted to see the numbers dialed and read the keys too. I thought it would be good to have a camera and bluetooth capability just in case. My wife needed a rugged phone because it spends most of its life in the bottom of a big purse and takes a lot of abuse. This phone has no external antenna to break off like her last one. She liked the yellow phone so she could hopefully find it easyier.
My daughter is away at school in a remote part of Washington, so she was looking for another carrier as well as a phone with lots of features. AT&T is one of only two carriers which gives a good signal strenth both in her area as well as the HWY to and from school, which is most of the way where there was no signal before with Sprint. AT&T filled those needs along with roll-over minutes on thier plan. She also wanted to use bluetooth a lot and does a great deal of texting. A camera was also important for her. We have had the phones now for 3 weeks and very pleased with what we've got. I think these will hold up very well with the daily activity they recieve. Battery life is much better than the specs for other rugged phones that only had about 3 days of standby. The Rugby lasts a minimum of a week between charges, so that makes it easy to just leave it home on charge Sunday mornings when we are at Church (So embarracing when it goes off at Church anyway). You can't go wrong with this phone for only a penney each plus about [...] for shipping. FIVE STARS all the way. My daughter says she would have liked to had a flash on the camera, but I like the longer battery life without flash.
Finally, a "man sized" phone! September 20, 2008 22 out of 22 found this review helpful
Disclosure:: I'm a guy with fairly large hands. These small slim phones were literally a pain, as my hand would cramp after just 5 minutes, and it was difficult to position the phone where the ear-speaker would allow me to hear, but the mic could still pick up what I was saying.
I spotted the Rugby the week of its release on the AT&T Wireless website, and I did some quick research. Not much there since the phone is that new (released September 15 2008), but there was plenty of incorrect info on some of the cell phone websites... particularly the screen sizes (the main screen is 176x220, the external is 96x96... many sites incorrectly list the main as 128x160 and don't even tell you what the external is). But what really piqued my interest was the size - it was a full quarter-inch wider than my current Nokia 6102i, and over a half-inch longer when folded. And at nearly 5 ounces, it has some meat to it.
I ordered the yellow unit from AT&T since I qualified for it as an upgrade phone. The SIM is a little tricky to get in and out as the slot is recessed and partially covered when the card is inserted. But once in, it was ready to go. I spent a few minutes getting the settings where I wanted them, and was quickly able to make calls, send/receive text and multimedia messages, and take/send pictures with the camera. With the Edge and 3G networks available, internet is much faster than with the Nokia. The memory is expandable with a microSD card, and once I got used to them, the menus were easy to follow.
But what I appreciate the most is the size and feel... it's almost as good as holding a standard corded-phone handset. It has a nice beefy feel to it, it's very long when open - it easily reaches from my ear to mouth, and the buttons are nicely sized/spaced. You can understand the military-spec rating when you hold it, as you can tell this phone is substantial and can take a hit.
I can't speak for the Push-To-Talk (not a PTT customer), the GPS navigation or the Bluetooth (haven't tried them yet) features. But everything else is just as advertised. The only complaint I have is the cover of the charger slot is very flimsy, and I can see that disappearing by accident one day. But since most phones have an exposed slot anyway, it's probably not that big a deal.
Since 1999, I've owned 3 Nokias and one Motorola... this is my first Samsung phone. And so far, I am very impressed.
