This quad-band GSM phone runs on AT&T's dual-band 3G (HSDPA/UMTS) network, for fast downloads and seamless video calls. It also offers a 1.3-megapixel camera, microSD memory expansion to 8 GB, Bluetooth for handsfree communication and stereo music streaming, access to personal email and instant messaging, and up to 5 hours of talk time.

The ruggedized Samsung Rugby is certified to Military Standard MI-SID-810F, withstanding dust, shock vibrations, rain, humidity, solar radiation and altitude and temperature extremes.
AT&T Service Options
This AT&T phone can handle high-speed data connectivity via AT&T's 3G mobile broadband data network, which is available in most major metropolitan areas. The AT&T 3G network uses the dual-band UMTS 850/1900 MHz network (also known as WCDMA), making it possible to enjoy a variety of feature-rich wireless multimedia services. It also gives AT&T the advantage of offering simultaneous voice and data services.

In areas where the 3G network is not available, you'll continue to receive service on the AT&T EDGE network, which offers availability in more than 13,000 US cities and along some 40,000 miles of major highways. Providing average data speeds between 75-135Kbps, it's fast enough to support a wide range of advanced data services, including video and music clips, full picture and video messaging, high-speed color Internet access, and email on the go. You'll also enjoy quad-band GSM connectivity, which allows you to make calls in more than 190 countries and access data applications in the more than 135 countries where AT&T offers international data roaming.

With 3G connectivity, you'll be able to access AT&T's Video Share service, which enables you to send a live, one-way video stream to another compatible phone during a standard voice call. The service also allows you to switch the direction of the video stream during the same phone call. (Customers must be in an area served by the company's 3G network and have a Video Share-enabled phone.) A majority of users in the architecture, engineering and construction industries rated the ability to share live video through Video Share highly, according to research commissioned by AT&T. Video Share lets you see progress on a job site or review the day's work without having to drive from an office or other site to do so.

This 3G-enabled handset is compatible with AT&T's Video Share calling.
You can take advantage of the AT&T Navigator GPS software and service, a full-featured premium navigation application that includes audible turn-by-turn directions, real-time traffic updates and re-routing options, and 3D moving maps (additional charges applicable). AT&T Navigator offers several other features to make your commute more enjoyable and reliable, including mobile access to Yellowpages.com. Additionally, AT&T Navigator is the only mobile phone-based GPS service that provides integrated speech recognition for address entry and points of interest search.

With 3G connectivity, you'll be able to access AT&T's Cellular Video (CV) service and the Internet while on the go. Cellular Video features content from CNN, The Weather Channel, iFilm, Comedy Central and exclusive premium content from HBO and much more. And you get access to AT&T Mobile Music, which enables you to buy tracks while on the, access the Napster subscription music service, stream music video, discover what's playing with Music ID song-recognition software, and find out what's hot with The Buzz music news portal. (A MEdia Max subscription bundle is recommended for accessing AT&T's Internet, video, and music services.)

The phone has a built-in web browser for MEdia Net downloads and mobile web browsing. AT&T's MEdia Net service enables you to receive and send emails, read news headlines, get weather updates, download games and ringtones, and more.

Small business and enterprise customers also have the option to use AT&T's Enterprise Paging to connect quickly to its workforce from a central location. Enterprise Paging is an AT&T-hosted service that allows a centralized dispatch system administrator to build customized group distribution lists of workers in the field and to send group notifications via text messaging. Workers can respond immediately or take the appropriate action in the message.

With its built-in A-GPS, you can use the optional AT&T Navigator service to get you to your destination with points of interest and turn-by-turn navigation.

4 out of 5 stars Rugged, durable, not frilly: the Hummer of cell phones.   January 6, 2009
I bought this phone specifically because I've had 3 or 4 phones damaged beyond repair, mostly from being dropped, thrown (not by me, but at me), water-logged, etc. And, I need my phone to be a phone - not an mp3 player, not a small version of a PC, I just want to be able to talk.... this phone accomplishes that. I've had it a month now, dropped it like 3 or 4 times - once on tile - and you'd never know. It's definitely bigger that your standard wireless phone, flipped open it's like talking on a house phone. The speaker is great. The camera is probably better than my hand held camera, and you can edit photos on the fly. The menu is easy to navigate and you can even configure the "Options" screen, which is pretty cool. The battery lasts longer than any other battery I've had, I've only been charging every four or five days.

The only thing I don't like is the PTT button. I wish that could be disabled (maybe it can, I don't know). I inadvertently hit it a lot when I open the phone, and it asks me if I want to set up PTT - which I don't.

Like I mentioned in the title, it's like the Hummer of cell phones.

4 out of 5 stars rugby phone   December 27, 2008

I just bought the rugby phone 4 days ago from at&t because I was due for an upgrade. I need a rugged phone because I am always outside and Im very rough with my phones. I wanted to get the verizon gzone because they are very durable phones and alot of my friends have it however it isnt possible for me to switch to verizon. I thought that at&t would never come out with a rugged phone but they finally did. So far I love the phone. Its simple to use once you get used to it (like all phones you have to get used to) but it still has some good features like the gps and music player. It is big enough that you can easily push the buttons and so that it feels much more durable. I only wish that it was completely submergable like the gzone is.
The only thing that i do not like about the phone is the outside display. You can change the setting so that it shuts off anywhere between 5 and 60 seconds but once its off you either have to hold the speakerphone button in for about 5 seconds or you have to open and close the phone to see the front screen.
Besides this the phone seems great. It is loud enough for me to hear and the speaker is loud enough when people are talking. The camera takes pretty decent pictures and videos and its easy enough to use
I think this phone will last alot longer than my other ones. And if not i have a two year warranty from at&t

4 out of 5 stars Delivers as advertised!   December 26, 2008

Got this phone due to having others drop and suffer damage. I read every review I could find online. Some people said and are correct that the PTT button on side is easy to press-it is but you learn to pretty much stay away from it. The speaker on front of phone is BY FAR the best I've ever heard. Once you answer or start a call you can activate the speaker and close the phone and enjoy the hands free-great in vehicle or if doing a project. I drive a diesel work truck and have NO problems hearing the speaker on this phone. The camera for a 1.3 mega pixel actually takes better pics than I expected. I have not activated the GPS since I have one and I think the $9.99 a month is too much for how often I'd use it. The buttons have a very good feel. I've already woked out in the rain and the phone got very wet-still woks No problems. The ringtones that come on the phone are probably the worst I've had yet. I use phonezoo.com (FREE) to download graphics and ringtones to phones now. Its a great free site. The call quality is very good. My wife says it is ALOT better than my previous Sony and my last Motorola. This is my first flip-phone that I've had and kept- I tried one a few years ago, it was to thin and I just couldn't open it very easily w/ one hand. That is no problem on this phone. It is a little thicker than most flips, but that has to due to its ruggedness. I would give this 5 stars if not for the fact as many other reviewers say about the front display not staying on very long. Kind of petty but I feel it is a legitimate gripe. I have not taken any videos yet so I can't comment on that. Also, want to mention that if you have alot of experience w/ different brands of phones, you probably don't need to open the manual. I have not yet and I had the phone figured out very quickly.

4 out of 5 stars Good Rugged Phone   December 22, 2008

I like having a rugged phone which can take the rough treatment it gets with me in the field. The very loud speakerphone is great. I have arthritis in my hands and it is important that the phone has keys which I can feel. I don't like the depth of the phone which doesn't slide easily into my shirt pocket. It just takes up too much room. Also, the phone doesn't automatically show the number of the last call received. I miss that feature. Nevertheless, it's the best phone I've had.

5 out of 5 stars Great product for anyone needing a sturdy, easy to use phone.   December 15, 2008

My wife got this for me. I really like the larger keypad and the overall "tough" feeling of the phone. I've dropped a few phones in my time. I really like how it feels like you could rough it up and it'd still be fine. I showed the phone to my brother, and we were ordering one for my brother and Mom next. To me, it is probably better and stronger and easier to use than the Pantech Breeze that at&t recommends for the older set. My Mom really likes the feel of it. My brother really needs a good, tough phone because he has been through a few. He works and goes to school so he is on the go all the time and this should work.
